Reflection Task 3

My candidate for the person of the year would be Alan Rickman because he was a very successful and talented actor. He was born in 1946 in London and died in 2016 because of cancerL He had a life partner named Rima Horton who is a councillor on the Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council. She became his first and last girlfriend. In an interview, Alan confirmed that they married in a private ceremony in 2012. He played many roles on screen and also on stage. He is mostly known for his role Severus Snape in Harry Potter movies. I have known him as Severus, too. However, when I look at his film filmography, I am amazed by his movies because he played roles almost 70 movies. This is really a great success in his life. Of course, he received a lot of nominations and awards for his successes. He also directed some movies as ‘The Winter Guest’ and this movie was regarded successful by critics despite his first experience as a director. Apart from his career success, he was honorary president of the International Performers' Aid Trust, a charity that works to fight poverty amongst performing artists all over the world. He was a warm and generous person. He had an amazing and impressive voice. You will ALWAYS be remembered Alan Rickman. RIP..

Reflection task 2b

‘Friends’ is a famous series which aired ten years from 1994 to 2004. It tells the story of six friends who live in New York. Its characters are Rachel, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Ross and Chandler. The show begins with the escape of Rachel from her wedding and coming to a café named Central Perk. She runs across with her friend Monica from high school there. She asks Monica to stay with her for a while and they become roommates. Joey and Chandler are their neighbor across and also their friends. Ross is Monica’s brother. Phoebe is Monica’s ex roommate. With these common connections, they become best friends. The theme music of it is ‘I’ll be there for you’ by Rembrandts. In my opinion, this theme music sums up the whole series because they always support one another in all situations. They mostly hung out in Central Perk. Throughout the series, there become some emotional approaches between the characters. To illustrate, Monica and Chandler are married, and Rachel and Ross have a baby. The show was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. In my opinion, they tried to reflect the importance and the value of friendship in an entertaining way. I like this funny way because it makes the show more sincere and credible. However, there is a side that I don’t like that much. This side is the emotional approaches between the characters because the show is about friendship and, in my opinion, there should have been more focus on the friendship. Yet, I love this series and each of the characters so much that I watch its some episodes when I am bored or sad. There will a special episode in February. Thus, I am very excited and happy about that. To sum up, friends is a very funny and sincere show, and I recommend it everyone.

Reflection task 2a

I have read news about the air pollution in China. The Guardian news argues that China has finally responded to the challenges caused by air pollution. China has encountered many problems related with pollution a few times, but it mostly ignored these problems and took a little measure about pollution.  However, this time the problem with pollution has caused so many debates among citizens that China is left no choice but to deal with the problem.  The measures taken by government are still inadequate, but China wants to seem at least as if it is interested in the problem. In my opinion, that the China ignored such an important issue is quite disappointing and upsetting because when they ignore this vital problem, they also ignore their citizen’s lives. There can be two ways to stop the pollution for me. The first way can be to halt or at least reduce using fossil fuels and using renewable resources because it can be said that the main reason for air pollution is usually using too much fossil fuels. When we take into consideration that China is an extremely crowded country, using fossils fuels even in a little amount can be enough for the pollution. The second way can be to limit the number of the cars as the China authorities has decided, but it should be implemented in long term. People should be encouraged to use bicycle instead of cars.  This situation should also be for all developed countries because in this way, we can save our world from pollution. To sum up, China should take serious and long term measures against the air pollution such as using renewable resources and encouraging people to use bikes. 

Reflection task 1a

My name is Tuğba. I study Foreign Language Education in METU. I would like to join your Karate-do group because I am interested in martial arts. I find them quite appealing and have a great respect for them. In my opinion, they contribute a lot of things to a person. Firstly, as they are a branch of sport, people can have a chance to do sport in their daily lives. While doing these sports, people can relax during the trainings, which are also entertaining. Secondly, when people are interested in martial arts, they feel more confident and become much stronger both physically and psychologically.I have experienced these emotions because I have been doing taekwondo for the last two semestre and become green belt. However, I want to try a different martial art in METU. Thus, I have decided to do karate-do this semester. I am not sure about what I can contribute to your group, but I believe your group will contribute to me a lot of skills. I think I can easily learn some basic techniques and involve in your demonstrations. To sum up, I want to improve myself in your group. I am quite interested in your group.

The writer thinks that the friends and followers she makes online are because of her being passionate and argumentative. When she expresses her ideas and beliefs in a strong way, she will make more followers and friends because people will think that she is a courageous person and they will admire to her. I agree with the writer’s opinion because both in online platforms and in real life, people want to express their thoughts and opinions freely. However, not all people can do this due to their shyness, and as a result, they admire those who can reflect their emotions and express their thoughts with determination. Thus, people want to follow them and be friends with them. In addition, people are inclined to like and follow tense arguments in online platforms because these situations encourage them to make comments about what is argued there, and this increases their self-confidences. Also, they think that these debates are exciting and entertaining. On the whole, I agree with the writer’s opinion about social media because people admire those who can express their opinions with determination and people also like making comments about something and following  exciting debates in social media.
